[Obama Appointed Tech CEO to High-Power
Military Position | teaparty.org | Conservative Tribune] “Last year, the
administration of then-President Barack Obama set up a Pentagon advisory board
and placed the chairman of Google’s parent company at its helm. Roughly one year
into President Donald Trump’s tenure, that man still remains at this coveted
position.
Launched in 2016 by then-Defense Secretary Ashton
Carter, the so-called Defense Innovation Advisory Board was designed “to
kick-start innovation across the U.S. military by building bridges to the
technology industry,” according to Reuters.
The basic premise was that perhaps the Pentagon’s
technological prowess could be enhanced if a bunch of pompous techies were to
advise it. Wonderful.
The pompous techie chosen to chair the board was Eric
Schmidt, the executive chairman of Google’s parent company, Alphabet. As of
December, Schmidt still leads the board, though he intends to step down from
Alphabet next month, according to Reuters.
Regardless, some view Schmidt’s continued leadership
with the board as problematic. For one, Schmidt happens to be a full-fledged
leftist who served as an adviser to failed Democrat presidential nominee Hillary
Clinton’s campaign.
Furthermore, Schmidt’s presence presents a massive
conflict of interest, according to David Williams, president of the Taxpayers
Protection Alliance.
“If the DOD is contemplating new technology to address
a new defense need, will it be skewed toward a technology that benefits Google
or one of the companies?” Williams told The Daily Caller. “Massive potential for
conflicts of interest with real taxpayer implications.”
It’s clear why Obama appointed Schmidt to his role on
the board — leftist authoritarians and tech moguls go together like a horse and
carriage — but it’s unclear why he still remains there…” Full text:
